Indonesian Expert Touts Sorghum-Based Bioethanol as Food-Secure Fuel Option
An energy expert from the University of Indonesia is urging the government to develop sorghum-based bioethanol as a means of supporting the country's energy transition without compromising food security.
Sorghum, according to Ali Ahmudi Achyak, has multiple benefits as both a food crop and a renewable energy source. It can grow on dry land, does not compete directly with staple food needs, and has potential as a raw material for bioethanol.
Achyak cautioned the government against developing bioethanol from primary food commodities such as sugarcane, cassava, and corn, which could threaten food security. He noted that if these crops are used extensively for ethanol, it could lead to shortages of essential products like sugar for households and other foods.
The government has set a target of 10 percent ethanol blend in fuel (E10) starting in 2027 as the first step before transitioning to E20. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia announced that the government is reviewing the mandatory ethanol policy since 2025 and finalizing the roadmap for E20 implementation, scheduled gradually between 2028 and 2029.
