Indonesia's Energy Efficiency Efforts Lag Behind
Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) reported that only 41 out of 164 companies receiving special natural gas prices have fully implemented mandatory energy management measures. These companies consume more than 4,000 tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE) annually, placing them above the threshold for mandatory energy management.
According to Gigih Udi Atmo, Energy Conservation Director, 121 companies have submitted energy-management reports to the government. The largest savings came from adjustments to operating parameters, generating 972 GWh of savings with an investment of Rp27 billion.
The ESDM calculated that the average investment for operating-parameter adjustments was Rp28 per kWh saved, compared to Rp276 per kWh for equipment replacement and Rp921 per kWh for maintenance and repairs. Energy conservation measures reduced gas consumption by approximately 5.54 million MMBtu, or about 3%.
