INPEX Shares Soar on Crude Price Surge Amid Middle East Tensions
Japan's INPEX (1605.T) saw its shares surge on August 18, reaching their highest level in roughly three months. The company's stock climbed 95 yen (2.51%) from the previous day to 3,870 yen.
The rebound was fueled by rising New York crude oil futures, which extended gains on August 17 and settled at $84.50 per barrel for September delivery. This increase in crude prices is a tailwind for INPEX, as it means higher selling prices for the company's crude oil output.
Market participants expect crude prices to remain elevated due to ongoing geopolitical risks in the Middle East. The lack of progress on extending the memorandum aimed at ending hostilities between the United States and Iran has heightened uncertainty over the region's outlook.
While higher crude prices are beneficial for INPEX, they also create headwinds for corporate earnings and household budgets in Japan due to increased domestic energy costs.
