Iowa Corn Exports Seen Rising with Philippines' Clean Energy Push

Iowa corn farmers are optimistic about increased exports to the Philippines due to the country's focus on cleaner energy and growth in livestock production.

The Iowa Corn Promotion Board's First Vice President, Paul Gieselman, noted that the Philippines' move to reduce carbon emissions will enhance ethanol imports from the US.

Gieselman said, 'It's a form of corn, and their want for sustainably sourced, lower carbon, cleaner air is exciting, and we would love to see the ethanol imports continue.'

The Philippines' Biofuels Act of 2006 requires all fuel sold for motors and engines to include locally sourced biofuels.

However, locally produced bioethanol uses sugarcane as a feedstock, while biodiesel comes from coconut oil.

Gieselman also anticipates increased corn shipments due to the recovering hog sector in the Philippines, which boosts feed grain demand.
