Iran and Oman Push for Temporary Strait of Hormuz Shipping Corridor

Iran and Oman are pushing forward with plans for a temporary shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, following talks in Tehran between the two countries. The proposed corridor would offer safer navigation for commercial vessels, which have been severely constrained due to security risks and mine threats. Technical negotiations are expected to continue on a permanent corridor, traffic management, information sharing, and maritime security services.

Despite the progress made, shipping traffic through Hormuz remains significantly below normal levels, with only 73 vessel transits recorded between August 10 and 16, down from 91 in the previous week. The Strait of Hormuz normally handles around a quarter of global seaborne oil trade, making disruption there a major concern for tanker markets, energy prices, and supply chains.

Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi expressed hope that a temporary corridor could be announced soon, while also stressing the importance of mine clearance and vessel information sharing. However, Iran has made it clear that restrictions will remain until the US meets certain conditions, including ending its naval blockade of Iranian ports and restoring permission for Iranian oil exports.
