Iran and Oman Seek Temporary Solution for Strait of Hormuz Amid Ongoing Tensions
The ongoing impasse between Iran and the US has led to a renewed discussion between Iran and Oman about managing the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil shipments. The two countries have been in on-and-off talks for weeks, aiming to establish a joint temporary navigational corridor through the strait. As part of this effort, they agreed to clear the area of mines.
The US has repeatedly claimed that all mines in the strait have been cleared, but shipping remains perilous due to ongoing tensions between Iran and its adversaries. In fact, an oil tanker was struck on Tuesday by an unidentified projectile, disabling it about 17 km north-east of Oman's Ash Shishah.
The US has also threatened to punish countries that continue to do business with Iran, but said it would not impose penalties immediately. Oil prices fell for a second day as traders brushed off the impact of the US sanctions.
