Iran and Qatar Negotiate Strategic Strait Amid US Blockade
Iran and Qatar held talks in Tehran on Thursday to discuss the strategic Strait of Hormuz, amidst a US naval blockade that has choked off Iran's oil imports. The meeting comes as Washington threatens wider secondary sanctions against countries, banks, and companies doing business with Iran.
Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi met with Qatar's foreign minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who also serves as prime minister. According to the Qatari foreign ministry, they discussed de-escalation efforts and a proposed framework for Hormuz between Iran and Oman.
The US naval blockade has prevented Iran from importing enough petrol to cover a domestic shortfall, with Iranian vice-president Mohammad Jafar Ghaempanah stating that 'petrol production is insufficient, and because of the US naval blockade, we cannot import it.'
