Iran and US Engage in Escalating Strait of Hormuz Confrontation

Escalation has reached new heights in the Strait of Hormuz as Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacked an unmanned U.S. vessel, prompting a retaliatory strike by the U.S. on three Iranian oil tankers.

The incident marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations, which have been simmering for months. According to reports, the IRGC claimed that the U.S. vessel had attempted to enter a restricted area of the Strait of Hormuz, prompting their decisive attack.

However, the U.S. maintains that Iran has been engaging in unprovoked attacks on American warships, and the strikes were a necessary measure to defend its forces. The U.S. Central Command (Centcom) stated that there were no U.S. service members harmed during the operation.

Eugene Gholz, an associate professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame, noted that 'the strait is neither fully closed nor fully opened,' highlighting the ongoing tug-of-war between Iran and the U.S. over control of this critical waterway.
