Iran-Backed Militias Attack Saudi Oil Pipeline

A key Saudi oil pipeline was attacked by Iran-backed militias in Iraq, leading to its shutdown and further pressure on global oil prices. The attack came as Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen continued their efforts to disrupt Saudi shipping.

The East-West pipeline, which bypasses the Strait of Hormuz, is a critical route for Saudi Arabia's oil exports. It had been increased from 2 million barrels per day to over 5 million barrels per day as an alternative to the Strait of Hormuz due to threats from Iran-backed militias.

Iraq's government confirmed that the attack originated from its territory and pledged to investigate, while dismissing two senior officials. The umbrella group of Iran-backed militias in Iraq denied their involvement but praised the Houthis for their 'ongoing battlefield victories against Saudi forces.'
