Iran Conflict Exposes EU Energy Dilemma
The ongoing conflict between Iran and the US-Israel alliance has significant implications for Europe's energy security strategy. The EU had previously been heavily reliant on Russian oil and gas, but in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the bloc began to diversify its energy sources.
Before the war, Russia was the largest supplier of crude oil to the EU, accounting for 16.5% of imports, followed by the US (8.2%), Norway (7.5%), Iraq (4.5%), and Libya (3.7%).
The EU's shift towards alternative suppliers has been accelerated by the conflict in Iran, which has exposed vulnerabilities in relying on external energy sources.
