Iran Demands Compensation After Oil Spill Reaches Qeshm Island

The Strait of Hormuz has become the site of another oil spill, this time affecting Iran's southern Qeshm island. According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, preliminary evidence suggests a foreign bulk carrier is responsible for the spill.

TankerTrackers, a website that monitors shipping movements worldwide, disputes this claim, stating that the spill was actually caused by an Iranian attack on a ship in Omani waters on August 3.

The oil slick has degraded the waters of the Gulf and Sea of Oman, with some 32,000 square meters of coastal area affected, along with waters covering 90,000 square meters. The environmental harm inflicted is said to be just one example of the widespread pollution that has destroyed the region's marine ecosystem over the past few decades.

Iranian officials are now calling for compensation from those responsible, citing trillions of dollars in damage imposed on Iran's coastal areas in recent decades. They argue that all parties benefiting from commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have a moral and legal obligation to remediate the environmental harm inflicted.
