Iran Grants Permission for Iraqi Oil Tankers to Cross Strait of Hormuz
Iran has granted permission to several Iraqi oil tankers to traverse the Strait of Hormuz after repeated requests from Baghdad. This concession follows a visit by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Iran's Parliament, to Iraq on August 22.
Iraqi President Nizar Amidi stated that Tehran has facilitated the passage of vessels carrying Iraqi oil through the waterway in recent days. However, he noted that the issue remains complicated and that Baghdad has discussed exporting Iraqi oil through the Strait with Iranian officials.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has significantly impacted Iraq's ability to export oil, with shipping traffic remaining far below pre-war levels. Prior to the conflict, Iraq produced approximately four million barrels of oil per day.
