Iran Keeps Hormuz Closed Until US Meets Conditions
Iran has stated that it will keep the Strait of Hormuz closed until the United States meets its conditions, which include ending the war and unfreezing Iranian funds held overseas. This latest demand was made by Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, in comments carried by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial waterway for global oil trade, and its closure has already had significant impacts on crude oil prices. Brent crude moved higher on Tuesday, with the October contract trading at $88.70 per barrel, up $0.98 or 1.12% from the previous day.
The Iranian government's demands make clear that it is tying the shipping issue directly to the broader conflict between Iran and the US. This stance complicates expectations of a quick agreement on restoring more oil traffic through the strait.
