Iran-Oman Talks Spark Oil Price Plunge Amid Hormuz Hopes
Oil prices plummeted over $2 per barrel on Wednesday as talks between Iran and Oman rekindled hopes that the Strait of Hormuz could reopen, easing shipping constraints in the Middle East region.
The Brent crude futures fell by $2.30, or 2.6%, to $86.28 a barrel, marking its lowest level since August 13. Similarly, U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures CLc1 dropped by $2.08, or 2.53%, to $80.29 per barrel, the lowest since August 10.
Mitsuru Muraishi, an analyst at Fujitomi Securities, attributed the market reaction to developments surrounding navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, with hopes for progress in talks between Iran and Oman triggering selling pressure.
However, uncertainty over the outlook has led to bargain buying, limiting further losses. According to Muraishi, prices are likely to remain range-bound for the time being.
