The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, has been a contentious issue in recent months due to rising tensions between Iran and the United States. Despite this, Iran has granted permission for some Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the waterway.

According to an Iranian news agency report, Iraq had requested permission from Tehran through various means, including during a visit by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf to Baghdad. The report stated that 'experience over the past six months has shown that Iraq has no alternative but the Strait of Hormuz to export most of its crude oil.'

Iran's decision comes as talks between Iran and Oman are underway to establish a new route through the Strait, which would control the entrance to the Gulf. However, Tehran emphasized that the waterway will not be opened solely based on these talks unless the US meets Iran's demands.
