Iran Sanctions 77 Vessels Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major flashpoint in global oil supplies as tensions rise between Iran and other Gulf powers. Iran has postponed talks on shipping through the strategic waterway, citing concerns over security.
Meanwhile, its Persian Gulf Strait Authority has sanctioned 77 vessels for allegedly violating Iranian protocols, sparking fears that further disruptions to crude supplies could be imminent.
The latest developments come as oil prices have jumped more than 2.5% amid escalating tensions and concerns over the security of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude is trading at around $107 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude is trading at about $102 per barrel.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global oil supplies, with many major producers relying on it to transport their crude to markets worldwide. The heightened tensions and concerns over security have already driven up petrol prices in Nigeria, with pump prices increasing across Lagos and other major cities.
