Iran Seeks Compensation for Qeshm Oil Spill Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions
Iran has called for compensation after an oil spill reached Qeshm island in the Strait of Hormuz. The spill is suspected to be linked to a foreign bulk carrier, according to Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei.
The preliminary evidence points to a foreign vessel as the source of the spill, which has degraded waters in the Gulf and the Sea of Oman. Baqaei argued that all parties benefiting from commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz have both a legal and moral duty to address the environmental harm caused there.
However, TankerTrackers, a US-hosted website monitoring shipping movements, claims that the spill is linked to an Iranian attack on the bulk carrier Minoan Pioneer in Omani waters on August 3. The spilled oil later moved across the strait toward Iran.
