Iran Seizes Opportunity Amid Midterms to Escalate Conflict
The conflict between Iran and its Gulf allies has escalated in recent days, with Tehran launching attacks on US and Saudi shipping vessels. The regime appears to be taking advantage of what it believes is a window of opportunity while Donald Trump is distracted by the midterm elections.
This week, Iran claimed to have attacked 10 ships, including two US vessels, citing low-intensity warfare around the Strait of Hormuz. However, the US has denied that its ships were struck and said it had sunk five Iranian oil tankers.
The escalation comes as Iran faces growing economic pressure due to the US blockade on its oil exports. With inflation running at 88% and a GDP set to shrink by 5.4%, experts believe Tehran is feeling desperate, attempting to ease the pressure on itself by increasing the pressure on others.
