Iran Snubs US Talks, Sparks Fears Over Strait of Hormuz Reopening
Oil markets remain on high alert as Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that his country will not resume direct talks with the United States, citing Washington's alleged violation of a memorandum of understanding reached earlier this year.
Araghchi's statement came after Iran indicated that an agreement with Oman to establish a temporary shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz was close. However, Tehran has since reiterated a series of conditions for a broader reopening of the waterway, including the lifting of sanctions and the withdrawal of U.S. military forces from around Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz, which is responsible for one-fifth of the world's oil trade, has remained heavily disrupted since the conflict began earlier this year. Limited cargo movements have continued under escorted shuttle operations, but commercial shipping has yet to return to normal levels.
