Iran Strait Tensions Send Oil Prices Soaring as Stocks Dip Ahead of US Jobs Report
The global stock market experienced a slight decline on Thursday ahead of Friday's US jobs report. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 374.38 points, or 0.69%, to 53,974.74, while the S&P 500 dropped by 15.36 points, or 0.20%, to 7,708.09.
Oil prices, however, saw a significant increase due to developments in Iran. The Strait of Hormuz is at the center of the controversy, with an Iranian parliamentary committee reviewing a bill that would impose fines on 'hostile' vessels, including those from the US and Israel, for transiting through the strait.
The draft bill proposes fines of up to 20% of a ship's cargo value for violations. The current price of U.S. crude oil rose by 3.39% to $77.78 a barrel, while Brent increased by 4.12% to $82.72 per barrel.
Will Compernolle, macro strategist at FHN Financial, expressed concerns that the ongoing tensions could have a negative impact on inflation expectations and economic growth.
