Iran Targets Gulf Oil Terminals in Bid to Hurt Trump's Presidency
A senior Iranian official has revealed that Tehran is planning to target oil terminals in the Gulf to hurt US President Donald Trump's presidency and impact his party's chances in the November midterms.
The plan, according to Majid Shakeri, an adviser to Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, involves strikes on Saudi Arabia's Yanbu pipeline terminal and the UAE's Fujairah terminal, which together handle around 5.5 million barrels a day of crude oil that has continued moving despite the broader disruption to Hormuz traffic.
The official said Iran is also targeting the support network sustaining the US-backed shadow fleet still operating within the strait itself, with the aim of cutting its roughly 5 million barrels a day flow down to zero.
The strategy is centered on oil markets and aims to use higher energy prices to erode support for Trump and his party in the run-up to the vote.
