Iran Tensions and Stalled Talks Send Oil Prices into Decline

Oil prices are headed for their first weekly decline in three weeks due to persistent Iran tensions and stalled talks. Brent crude futures dropped 0.3% to $89.45 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) fell by the same margin to $83.31. The decline follows the US Treasury Department's launch of Operation Economic Outcast on August 24, which targeted over 60 individuals and entities linked to Iran's nuclear and missile procurement, cyber operations, and oil revenues.

The market reaction was initially negative, with Brent falling 2.4% to $92.17 a barrel and WTI declining 2.4% to $85.01 on August 24. However, the Treasury measures focused on financial networks and oil-smuggling operations rather than announcing an immediate physical interruption of crude supply.

The Strait of Hormuz remains the critical oil supply risk, with total oil movements through the strait averaging 4.9 million barrels per day in the second quarter of 2026, down from 21.6 million barrels per day in the fourth quarter of 2025. The International Energy Agency estimates that about 20 million barrels per day of crude and oil products moved through Hormuz in 2025.

OPEC+ has continued adjusting production while maintaining its commitment to supporting market stability. With OPEC+ output adjustments and the US campaign focused on Iran's financial and oil networks, a sustained recovery in commercial flows would provide further room for crude prices to remain under pressure.
