Iran Unveils 200 Billion Cubic Meters of Natural Gas in Fars Province

A significant discovery has been made in Iran's energy sector, with the country announcing over 200 billion cubic meters of natural gas found in the southern Fars province. The newly discovered field contains more than 160 billion cubic meters of extractable gas, which could provide a substantial source of additional supply once developed.

Petroleum Minister Mohsen Paknejad described the gas as 'sweet', meaning it has very little hydrogen sulphide, a toxic compound that can increase operating and development costs. This characteristic makes the field less costly to develop and operate compared to other gas fields with higher levels of hydrogen sulphide.

The discovery comes at a time when Iran's energy sector is facing challenges due to months of conflict and attacks on its energy infrastructure, including gas production facilities and oil depots. However, the benefits from this new reserve are unlikely to be immediate, as production would likely take years to come online.
