Iran Unveils Huge Gas Discovery Amid Ongoing Energy Crisis
Iran has discovered a significant new natural gas field in the southern province of Fars. The newly found field contains an estimated 7.5 trillion cubic feet of gas, with around 5.7 trillion cubic feet considered recoverable.
This discovery comes six months into Iran's war with the US and Israel, which has disrupted the country's energy infrastructure and limited its ability to produce and export fuel.
According to Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad, the recoverable gas in this new field is equivalent to around 15 years of output from one phase of the giant South Pars gas field. The newly discovered gas is also described as 'sweet gas', which generally contains relatively low levels of hydrogen sulphide.
The significance of this discovery goes beyond adding another large amount to Iran's already massive gas reserves. It could strengthen domestic energy security, support industrial activity, and create an additional source of revenue for the country if the gas can be brought to market.
