Iran Unveils Massive Gas Discovery Amid Ongoing Energy Strains

Iran's Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad announced on August 24, 2026, that his country has discovered approximately 212 billion cubic meters of natural gas in Fars province. This find is significant as it includes around 161 bcm (5.7 tcf) of recoverable gas.

Paknejad described the gas as 'sweet', meaning low in hydrogen sulphide and easier to process, with associated condensates potentially worth 'tens of billions of dollars'. The new discovery's potential output is comparable to a single phase of South Pars, the world's largest field which Iran shares with Qatar.

This find comes at a good time for Iran as its gas sector has been under strain since a wave of US-Israeli air strikes hit energy infrastructure in late February 2026. As a result, national gas production capacity dropped by around 25%.
