Tehran has announced a major gas reserve discovery in the southern Fars province. According to Petroleum Minister Mohsen Paknejad, more than 212 billion cubic meters of natural gas have been found, with over 160 billion cubic meters deemed extractable.

The 'sweet' gas contains very little hydrogen sulphide, which should reduce operating and development costs. This discovery comes as Iran's energy sector struggles with the aftermath of US-Israeli strikes on its infrastructure and economic sanctions.

Paknejad described the find as a foundation for the country's energy future, and authorities are taking urgent measures to begin extraction as soon as possible. The timing is significant given recent tensions between Iran and the US, with Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei warning against any participation in economic warfare.
