Iran-US Tensions Fuel WTI Oil Price Surge
West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil prices continue to rise, reaching $86.95 on Tuesday as tensions between the US and Iran escalate. The conflict has added a geopolitical risk premium to oil markets, pushing up crude prices.
The situation began when the US struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. In response, Tehran targeted US facilities in Jordan, while President Donald Trump warned that further military action remains possible and threatened to hit Iran hard.
Oil market concerns are also fueled by threats against Kharg Island, a key hub for Iranian oil exports. A disruption to these facilities could impact global supply, keeping the risk premium elevated for WTI.
Analysts at Deutsche Bank highlight that the latest move higher in yields has been driven primarily by 'the weekend escalation in the Middle East that saw the US and Iran exchange strikes.' They note that President Trump indicated the US would respond to Iran's attacks against US facilities, even as he attempted to temper perceptions of a broader conflict.
