Iran War Fuels Record-Breaking UK Energy Bills
UK energy bills are set to rise by 4% in October to their highest level since July 2023, due to the Iran war's impact on global gas supply. The Energy Price Cap will be raised from £1,663 ($2,254) to £1,729 ($2,344), according to Cornwall Insight.
The UK has an energy price cap in place that protects households from excessively high bills by capping the price utility providers can charge per kilowatt hour. Ofgem sets the cap quarterly, and the current increase is driven by higher wholesale gas prices amid the Middle East crisis.
The surge in energy bills drove inflation in the UK to 2.9% in July, the highest in four months. Analysts say this could be the beginning of a new inflation shock cycle.
