Iran War's Uneven Economic Toll: Investors Thrive, Consumers Suffer

The Iran war has been ongoing for six months now, and its economic toll is being felt worldwide.

Despite dire predictions of surging oil prices, worldwide recession, and economic catastrophe, the global economy has managed to 'pull off the financial equivalent of a Mission Impossible scene,' according to Michael Ashley Schulman, an investment strategist with Cerity Partners.

The war's impact on investors has been mixed. While stock markets initially suffered, bottoming out in late March, they have since rebounded strongly, with the Dow up nearly 19%, the S&P 500 up almost 22%, and the Nasdaq surging 27%.

However, the war's effects on consumers have been more pronounced. Oil prices rose sharply, peaking at nearly $120 a barrel, although they have since eased back to around a 20% increase from pre-war levels. This has hit anyone on the move particularly hard, with jet fuel expected to cost 70% more than in 2025.

The war has also had a negative impact on the fight against hunger, as fertilizer prices soared by 44% due to strained supply chains and transportation costs.
