Crude oil prices surged across international markets on Friday after Iranian forces intercepted multiple commercial vessels attempting to navigate the volatile Strait of Hormuz.

The incident highlights the enduring fragility of the global energy chokepoint, through which roughly one-fifth of the world's petroleum supply flows.

According to regional news agencies and shipping monitors, including Kpler, the intercepted tankers were targeted after attempting to bypass controlled maritime corridors.

Iranian state media outlets claimed that several vessels ignored explicit warnings regarding designated transit lanes.

An official military spokesperson announced that 'violating tankers that continued sailing through unauthorised routes were successfully intercepted and brought to a halt.'

Benchmark crude futures climbed by over one per cent as commodities traders priced in heightened supply risks.
