Iranian Oil Tanker Buildup Suggests US Blockade Working
A growing number of Iranian oil tankers have gathered off the country's coast in recent days, indicating that the US naval blockade is having a significant impact on Tehran's energy exports.
According to United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), around 50 laden vessels are currently idling along Iran's coastline in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, up from 45 last week and 36 when the blockade was reinstated on July 14.
The US action is intended to stop activity at Iranian ports, but it's also preventing empty vessels needed for fresh loadings from returning. This has resulted in a buildup of ships along the coast, with UANI's Charlie Brown stating that 'the blockade seems effective,' given the increase in the number of ships.
The situation has led to hopes rising for a potential interim deal between Washington and Tehran to free up shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. However, the US blockade continues to disrupt Iranian oil exports, with fresh offers being scarce since the US threatened strikes last week.
