Iran's Azadegan Oil Facility Overcomes External Challenges Through Domestic Development
The Azadegan oil facility in Iran is being developed by domestic experts after years of external pressures and internal challenges hindered its progress. The project aims to raise production from around 205,000 barrels per day to 550,000 barrels per day.
Initially, Japan's Inpex signed an agreement in 2004 to assess and develop the field, with plans to invest billions of dollars and gradually increase production capacity through its technical expertise and financial resources. However, Inpex eventually withdrew from the project due to concerns over American sanctions and restrictions on financial cooperation with Iran.
Chinese companies later entered parts of the development process but faced difficulties as well. As a result, the National Iranian Oil Company and domestic contractors assumed a larger role in advancing the project and overcoming the challenges created by foreign withdrawal.
