Iran's Demands Spark Oil Market Turmoil
Kirk Edwards, an Odessa oilman, says the ongoing war with Iran and its associated politics are causing turmoil in the energy industry.
Iran is reportedly demanding compensation, sanctions relief, changes to the US military presence in the Gulf, and greater control over passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
Edwards notes that the Trump Administration has repeatedly claimed an agreement with Iran was imminent or close to being announced, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggesting a deal could be announced within a day or two earlier this week.
This has led to oil prices fluctuating as producers make drilling decisions based on prices and companies hedge billions of dollars of future production.
Edwards questions how many times Washington can tell the world a deal is imminent before the market stops believing it, citing cumulative Middle Eastern oil supply losses exceeding 1.3 billion barrels since the crisis began.
