Iran's Gas Crisis Deepens as Billions Wasted Through Inefficient Energy Management
Iran is facing a severe gas shortage this winter, with a daily shortfall of about 100 million cubic meters. This situation has been exacerbated by aging infrastructure and declining pressure in gas fields, which have led to inefficient energy management.
The Iranian regime's Parliamentary Research Center estimates that 50.5 million cubic meters of associated gas are burned each day in flare stacks due to insufficient infrastructure. This has resulted in a staggering opportunity cost of approximately $33.79 billion over the past decade, with the potential revenue from collecting and exporting flared gas amounting to around $4.6 billion annually.
Iran's gas flaring situation is not unique to the country; Russia ranked first globally for gas flaring in 2025, while Iran took second place behind its rival. However, when adjusted for oil production, Iran's flaring intensity indicator is significantly higher than that of neighboring countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
