Iran's Hormuz Gambit: A Strategic Showdown in the Middle East
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has taken a dramatic turn as Iran defiantly asserts its control over the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway, through which nearly one-fifth of the world's energy cargoes are routed, is now seen as a key battleground in the escalating tensions between Iran and the US.
Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has issued a warning to the global community, stating that the Strait will be opened and closed only under Iran's command. He emphasized that as long as the US does not accept defeat and stop indulging in fantasies, Iran will continue to enforce the blockade.
The recent surge in oil prices is a direct result of Iran's effective shutdown of the Strait, with prices reaching as high as $120 a barrel. Although they dipped after a ceasefire announcement, hostilities resumed, causing oil prices to edge up again.
US President Donald Trump has responded by asking Americans to accept slightly higher gasoline prices, saying it is worth ensuring that 'a very evil country' does not have a nuclear weapon. Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has countered that the US has miscalculated in sparking the Middle East conflict and initiating a blockade of the Strait.
