Iran's Oil Exports Come to a Near-Halt Amid Current Circumstances
Iran's oil exports have almost ground to a halt, according to Abdolnaser Hemmati, Governor of the Central Bank of Iran. In a statement on August 19 (Tehran time), Mr. Hemmati said that oil exports have 'basically stalled' due to current circumstances.
Despite this significant setback, Mr. Hemmati expressed confidence in the Central Bank's planning and its ability to maintain foreign exchange reserves. He attributed Iran's continued access to foreign currency to the bank's previous efforts, stating that 'the Central Bank's plan is correct, which is why Iran currently has foreign exchange reserves.'
This reliance on reserves comes at a critical time for Iran, as oil exports play a vital role in the country's economy. The near-freezing of oil exports could put significant pressure on Tehran's foreign currency earnings, while placing a requirement to maintain reserves to serve urgent needs.
