Iran's Strait of Hormuz Blockade Sparks Global Energy Crisis Fears
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway for global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies, but recent tensions have raised concerns about its security. The US and its allies are considering ways to protect the strait from Iranian threats, which could involve authorizing the use of 'all necessary means,' including force.
However, experts warn that defending the strait is significantly more challenging than protecting Red Sea shipping routes, where a similar effort by Western powers failed against Yemen's Houthis. The US mission to protect Red Sea shipping launched in December 2023 and cost billions of dollars, but ultimately resulted in the sinking of four ships and the expenditure of over $1 billion in weapons.
Iran has far more advanced military forces than the Houthis, with access to cheap drones, floating mines, and missiles. 'Defending convoy operations in the Strait of Hormuz is significantly more challenging than in the Red Sea,' said retired Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery.
