Iran's Toughened Stance Sends Natural Gas Prices Soaring
Natural gas futures surged to $2.762 on August 10, up 3.8% from the previous day, in response to Iran's toughened negotiating stance and the near-total collapse of LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway for global energy supply chains, and the US military operations against Iran have significantly reduced LNG exports through this route. This has led to an intensified competition for US LNG cargoes worldwide, as American producers have become a crucial alternative source for European and Asian buyers.
The increased demand for US LNG, combined with above-normal temperatures forecasted until August 21, has contributed to the rise in natural gas futures. However, the EIA's latest weekly storage report showed that US energy firms added 33 billion cubic feet to storage for the week ended July 31, which could be seen as a bearish data point.
