Iraq Achieves Third Consecutive Wheat Self-Sufficiency Season

The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture announced that Iraq has achieved full self-sufficiency in its strategic wheat harvest for the third consecutive season, while also securing complete domestic self-sufficiency in date production. The ministry attributed this success to targeted state interventions, including climate-resilient crop genetics and subsidized modern sprinkler systems.

The 2026 winter harvest solidified a three-year streak of domestic grain self-reliance, with the ministry already preparing its winter crop plan to maintain full coverage into 2027. To combat persistent water scarcity across the Tigris and Euphrates basins, modern pivot and localized sprinkler systems are distributed under a 33% state subsidy.

Iraq's date palm population expanded from roughly 12 million trees in 2003 to 22 million trees in 2026, driven by replanting campaigns and commercial orchard developments. The ministry emphasized that Iraq's border trade restrictions are not arbitrary, but managed dynamically through the Ministry's Planning and Follow-up Directorate.
