Iraq-Backed Drone Attack Hits Key Saudi Oil Pipeline
Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline was attacked by drones originating from Iraqi territory on September 10, causing injuries and material damage. The Saudi Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks in a statement, confirming that personnel were injured and repairs are underway.
The ministry also announced that it would not respond militarily at this stage, at the request of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, to give Baghdad time to take necessary measures to prevent further attacks. However, Saudi Arabia reserves its right to defend itself.
The East-West pipeline has taken on significant importance for Saudi Arabia since Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz in February 2026. The kingdom had rerouted oil exports through the pipeline after the strait closed, with approximately 5 million barrels per day being exported via the Red Sea port of Yanbu.
