Iraq Probes Drone Attack Claims Amid Tensions with Saudi Arabia
The government of Iraq has ordered an investigation into Saudi Arabia's claim that it intercepted drones launched from Iraqi territory. The incident occurred at a sensitive moment for Iraq-Saudi relations, with Prime Minister Ali Al Zaidi scheduled to visit Riyadh soon.
Saudi Arabia's Defence Ministry stated that its air defences had intercepted and destroyed several drones targeting its territory from Iraq, intended to hit oil facilities in Eastern Province and Riyadh. The ministry accused Iran-backed militias of carrying out the attacks, describing them as 'terrorist' attacks targeting Saudi energy infrastructure.
The Iraqi government has pledged legal action against those responsible and rejected any use of the country as a launch pad for attacks. Baghdad sought to reassure Riyadh of the strength of their bilateral relationship, emphasizing that relations with the Kingdom are deep-rooted and fraternal, founded on mutual respect, shared interests, and principles of good neighborliness.
