Iraq Proposes Joint Security Council for Iran and Saudi Arabia

The government of Iraq has proposed a joint security council between Iran and Saudi Arabia in an effort to ease tensions between the two regional powers. The proposal was made by Qasim al-Araji, national security adviser to the Iraqi prime minister, who stated that 'the problem between the two countries is a crisis of trust.'

The idea comes amid heightened regional tensions, which have been exacerbated by recent drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities from Iraqi territory. The attacks were blamed on Iran-affiliated militias.

The proposal for a joint security council has been presented to both Tehran and Riyadh, but neither country has commented on the matter at this time.
