Iraq Seeks LNG Supplies from TotalEnergies to Fuel Power Plants
Baghdad is seeking to secure fuel for its power plants by diversifying its gas sources, and it's exploring new avenues to do so. The Ministry of Electricity has signed a preliminary agreement with TotalEnergies, a French company, to discuss the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and regasification within the country.
The agreement aims to reduce Iraq's reliance on limited gas sources and provide a more stable fuel supply for its power plants. This, in turn, is expected to increase electricity supply hours and give the Ministry of Electricity additional options during negotiations with suppliers.
Under the proposed approach, a floating platform would dock at Iraqi ports in Basra, receive LNG shipments, conduct regasification operations, and then transport the fuel via the national gas pipeline network to power plants. This will enhance the flexibility of the fuel system and enable Iraqi authorities to evaluate quantities, timing, and commercial terms prior to finalizing a binding agreement.
