Iraq Seeks Special Oil Shipping Deal with Iran Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions
The diplomatic effort by Iraqi Parliament Speaker Haibat Al-Halbousi to secure special treatment for Iraq's oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz reflects deep concerns over regional tensions threatening to disrupt Baghdad's primary economic lifeline.
During high-level talks with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in Baghdad, Al-Halbousi requested 'special consideration' and a dedicated status for Iraq's crude oil shipments from maritime disruptions.
The request comes as the country heavily depends on safe passage through the narrow Strait of Hormuz to reach global energy markets. Escalating tensions between Iran and the US have repeatedly constrained Iraqi crude flows, forcing Baghdad to seek permanent shipping guarantees from both Tehran and Washington.
