Iraq's Oil Ministry and Shell have discussed plans to increase gas production from oil fields in Basra province. The discussions, led by Deputy Oil Minister for Extraction Affairs Naseer Aziz and Shell's Managing Director for Iraq and the UAE Fakher Bader, aimed to boost the total production capacity of the Basra Gas Company (BGC).

The joint venture between Iraq's South Gas Company (SGC), Shell, and Mitsubishi seeks to maximize state earnings by increasing naphtha production and exports. Direct gas recovery from oil fields is expected to reduce gas flaring and support environmental goals.

Enhancing hydrocarbon value through domestic gas networks will provide Baghdad with critical financial stability amid regional transit issues affecting crude lines. The initiative aims to guarantee a reliable fuel supply for domestic industries and power plants, alleviating electricity shortages.
