Iraq Signs Fourth Phase of Energy Cooperation Agreement with Siemens
The Iraqi government has signed the fourth phase of its Energy Cooperation Agreement with Siemens, marking a significant milestone in the country's efforts to modernize its power sector.
The agreement was overseen by Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a virtual meeting. The partnership aims to build highly efficient generation capacities, expand transmission and distribution networks, and reduce reliance on imported fuel.
Iraq relies heavily on natural gas supplies from Iran to generate electrical power, but this can be unreliable due to regional tensions. To address the country's increasing energy demand, the Iraqi government is collaborating with Siemens to develop new power plants using local fuel and combined cycle technology.
