Iraq has announced plans to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Syria to build an oil pipeline connecting Iraqi oil production sites to global export markets through the Mediterranean. The proposed pipeline aims to give Iraq another route to export crude through the Mediterranean, reducing its reliance on Gulf export terminals and the Iraq-Turkey pipeline.

According to an official cabinet statement, the Iraqi government has authorized the director general of Basra Oil Company to sign the MoU with Syria's Ministry of Energy. The details of the pipeline's capacity, financing, and construction timeline remain unclear at this time.

This initiative is part of Iraq's efforts to strengthen its oil and gas sector, expand export options, and attract foreign investment. The country has been working to reconnect energy infrastructure with neighboring countries as part of efforts to secure more stable export routes.
