Baghdad is now a crucial transit hub for international trade as Iraqi trucks join the TIR system, transporting goods from Saudi Arabia to Central Asia via the Arar border crossing.

The General Company for Land Transport reported over 5,000 international transit operations since March 2025, with Iraqi trucks participating in transit operations under the TIR customs system for the first time.

This arrangement provides Iraqi transport businesses a more direct involvement in international freight and opens up another possible non-oil cash stream for Baghdad.
