Ireland's Rising Energy Prices Spark Solar Panel Interest

Energy prices in Ireland have been rising due to the conflict in the Middle East, which has impacted natural gas production and supply chains. As a result, electricity providers such as Electric Ireland, Prepay Power, Yuno Energy, Flogas, and SSE Airtricity have increased their prices.

The price of natural gas has surged from €31 per megawatt hour (mWh) prior to the conflict to €59 mWh this week. A reprieve in June and July saw energy prices fall to between €42 and €43 mWh, but they have since risen again.

With higher temperatures than usual over the past few months, households may consider installing solar panels to save money on their electricity bills. The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) offers grants that can reduce the cost of solar panels by €1,800.

Paul Deane, senior lecturer in clean energy futures at University College Cork, estimates that a full solar-panel system will cost around €6,000 after the grant is deducted. This should pay for itself within 10 years through savings on electricity bills.

The panels will produce electricity for 25 years, generating savings for households long after the initial investment is paid back. However, it's worth noting that most of the electricity generated will be during the spring and summer months, with very little output during winter unless there are clear skies.
