Italy Becomes EU's Top LNG Importer Amid Gas Crunch
Italy has become the EU's top liquefied natural gas (LNG) importer in July, defying the trend of reduced purchases across Europe. The country's traders have been taking advantage of government incentives to buy LNG for refilling its storage sites.
According to ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg, Italy leapfrogged its peers this month for the first time since 2017. Its power sector is heavily reliant on gas and saw a significant increase in energy needs during recent heatwaves.
The divergent strategies among European countries amount to opposing bets on how the gas crunch will evolve before winter. If Middle East disruptions persist, Italy's expensive stockpiling could prove prescient, while nations with thin inventories may face tighter supply and higher costs in winter.
